How to Find Your Instagram Niche & Grow Your Profile

There are so many reasons to start an Instagram account. With more than 500 million active users on the platform every day, it is the perfect space to curate and share information, build a following, and engage with an audience. This incredible threshold of traffic also means that as a content creator, it becomes vital to build a profile that stands out and to take strategic steps to build your following. One of the key ways to do this is by intentionally narrowing in on an Instagram niche and building out a content strategy that intentionally leans into that niche.

Today, we’re going to explore how to find your Instagram niche in order to grow your profile.

Know Your Audience

If you are building an Instagram account from scratch, one of the core questions to ask yourself is, ‘Who is my primary audience?’

Answering this question will differ depending on the angle of your account. Let’s start with the basics: is your account a Personal or Business account?

A Business Profile vs A Personal Profile

If your account is primarily a business profile, focused on the products or services you offer, this will guide your follower’s expectations. Suddenly posting about your personal life, for example, may feel completely out of place. Some of the best business accounts, however, use a personal connection to create loyalty with their followers. Therefore, we're not saying to never talk about yourself, but in a business account the primary focus isn’t personal.

In a personal account, however, the opposite is true! Your followers expect you to post and talk about yourself, sharing the ins and outs of your personal life. Perhaps your Instagram account is a blend of both - business and personal. This type of account is a combination of both marketing your particular product or service integrated into an account that has a lifestyle edge (like ours!). Be aware that different emphases will bring in different audiences: accounts based on personal content will appeal to different demographics than something more focused on services or products. Your ideal audience should drive your Instagram niche since you want to build an account that you know they would want to follow!

If you are using Instagram to promote your business and service, then your primary audience should be your customer demographic. Check out our blog, ‘How to Make Money on Instagram’ for more information on how best to utilize Instagram for your business. Alternatively, if you're running a lifestyle account, you want to hone in on an audience that shares the same interests and values as you.

The Mayes Team: Discovering Our Instagram Niche

As far as businesses go, we’ve had a fairly unusual journey navigating Instagram. When we first started growing our account, we were packing up our family and hitting the road, committing to two years of adventure and travel on our Skoolie. This was the season that our Instagram following initially exploded. Our Instagram content echoed our journey: documenting our life on the road, the realities of living minimally, and what it’s like to live as a family on a converted school bus.

Our Instagram niche was a blend of travel, family, and lifestyle. Our followers were joining in on our journey because they were genuinely interested in our unconventional lifestyle and wanted to share in the adventure. Our audience was fellow Moms and Dads, adventurers, minimalists, and those living with wanderlust.

The Evolution of Our Instagram Niche

Since then, our lifestyle and, therefore, our Instagram niche, has evolved. We’ve settled in Northern California, bought our dream house, and spent the last year working on renovations.

Our Instagram has naturally followed this progression in our lifestyle. If you’ve been following along, you’ll have watched us as we’ve documented the saga of our concrete bathroom, helped us pick out the perfect furnishings for our living room, and watched our kids grow as our family has settled back into the throws of a normal family life, not on wheels!

Our Instagram audience has naturally evolved too! We’ve picked up home model enthusiasts, those looking for renovation tips, mompreneurs, and so forth, all of whom have joined along for this next stage in our family’s adventure.

Despite these subtle genre changes, our overarching Instagram niche has always been Lifestyle. We document our everyday family life and stay true to whatever season we’re living in - Skoolie or no Skoolie!

We are an interesting case study. As business owners, we know that our core demographic and customer base are actually young professionals and freelancers looking to enhance their digital marketing. Our primary products are our website domain site, Maisey, and our educational courses that seek to empower entrepreneurs with the skills they need to get a digital marketing campaign off the ground. That being said, we have made the decision to stay consistent within the lifestyle niche, sprinkling in educational content as an added plus that drives traffic to our website and products.

Visual Consistency

The evolution of our Instagram niche has been slow, strategic, and intentional. While pursuing this transition, we’ve been highly aware that ‘consistency’ is one of the most valuable attributes of a successful Instagram account. While our Instagram niche may have changed over time, we’ve continued to remain focused on our consistency. From our visual aesthetic to our use of hashtags; to our caption copy to the way that we document and share about our family - we’ve created a consistent brand that has withstood the changes in our Instagram angle.

With this in mind, once you’ve honed in on a consistent content niche, you will then want to develop your visual aesthetic in order to build out a feed that is easy to recognize and feels appropriate to your brand. When you scroll through our account, you’ll notice our monochromatic pallet with only a few neutral accent colors. You’ll see a consistent photographic quality and similar filters and edits on every photo that we post. We stay up-to-date with Instagram’s latest updates and best practices and learn how to adapt and transplant our visual niche onto Instagram’s latest and greatest features, including IGTV, reels, and so forth!

Will Your Instagram Niche Sell?

Instagram is a marketplace. It’s competitive - a landscape where you fight to create a unique voice and build a following that suits you. Here is a rundown of the eleven most profitable (and most followed) Instagram niches of 2020:

  1. Travel
  2. Beauty
  3. Fashion
  4. Health and fitness
  5. Lifestyle
  6. Parenting
  7. Business
  8. Music
  9. Photography
  10. Food
  11. Animals

If you are carving out your Instagram niche for the first time, you want to make sure that you are honing in on an interest that Instagram users are already passionate about. Do your research and development! Follow leading accounts within your sphere. Analyze what works and what doesn’t work within these accounts. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • How regularly do they post?
  • Which of their posts receive the most engagement?
  • How do they engage their audience through Instagram features?
  • What other accounts within their Instagram nice do they follow?
  • What hashtags are they targeting to grow their following?

Educate yourself and become an expert in your specific Instagram niche until you feel confident of the landscape that you are walking into! Once you’ve done your research, take the next step, and position your account within your Instagram niche! We can’t wait to see you boom and flourish within your niche! We are confident that knowing your Instagram niche is going to help anchor and steer your Instagram growth in a strategic direction and attract your ideal audience!
