Our Tiny Kitchen
The area of our bus that seems to be getting the most attention is the Kitchen...and rightly so!!
It was the area that I had the clearest vision for. You see, one this that is AMAZING about building a tiny home is that you get to build your absolute dream home, with all the fixtures and fittings you've always desired and it costs hardly anything because you only need a tiny amount!!
The original inspiration for our kitchen was this
post. I've always loved Scandinavian Modern design and since we had always lived in rentals...I relished the fact that we could make this bus completely our own! I knew from the get go that I wanted the whole house to be white, black and grey (just like my wardrobe!) but added in the wood countertops to break it up a little. The links to buy everything in our bus are at the bottom of this post.
We saved a lot of money by choosing birch-wrapped plywood for the countertops instead of adding a seal (which would inevitably darken the wood) we decided to go with using wood butter to preserve the wood. We chose to minimize the size of our refrigerator and get an under-counter fridge/freezer because we knew that counter space would be a big struggle....especially without a dishwasher!! All the fixtures in the bus are matte black .
We made these additions to the space to minimize what would be left on the counter:
- We added a floating shelf to store our plates, bowl and cups and only keep enough dishes and silverware for one meal for each member of the family
- We mounted a knife magnet and it is waaaaay cooler than a knife block
- The paper towel holder is mounted under the cabinets
A few of our favorite things...
- We LOVE t his drying rack and store it under the counter when not in use, we also keep our clean silverware in it
- Our 23 inch Vigo sink...we chose the deepest sink we could find and could store dishes for daaays if we wanted to
- Yes, we don't have much fridge
space (we find the freezer size not a problem) BUT I would not change it one bit, the counter space is SO worth it!
- I was really nervous about the tile situation...I was not willing to take the risk of ceramic tiles smashing (since it's such a big space) so we opted to go with peel and stick. It was definitely a chore to get them up and they are by no means perfect! But I do love the look of them
Overall...simplifying our kitchen has been very easy. We got rid of most of large appliances and very rarely do we wish we had more. When you really think about it...a pot and lid can be a popcorn popper and you can get your daily arm workout in when you don't have an electric whisk! The only thing that I would change would be a bigger oven and more organization inside of the cabinets!
