Ever wanted to know how to make 6 figures in one year? Well, today we’re holding NOTHING back. We’re going to be sharing the number one secret that we’ve learned from over a decade of building our brand and seeing results. We are talking full disclosure - sharing everything we wish we knew when we first got started. 



See, here at The Mayes Team, we care about generosity. We want to share our brand-building tips with you because we want to see you empowered and watch your brand fly! We spent hours - literally thousands of hours - trying, failing, getting up, and trying again. We don’t want you to have to make the same mistakes that we did! 

The Secret to Starting

Have you heard of the old expression, ‘Build it and they will come’? So many people have this mentality when it comes to building a successful brand. They strive, putting all of their attention into getting that college degree, into building their following, into perfecting their product. 

Is that you? Have you ‘built’ something and are now looking to learn how to market it? 

Or, are you starting from square one? Perhaps you have business dreams, product dreams, brand dreams. You have the tenacity and skill to bring those dreams to life, but you are overwhelmed with not knowing exactly which facet of your brand you ought to be starting with. 

How on earth do you take those first steps to get your brand off the ground? 

If you ask Google you get hit with a barrage of information. Most online marketing educators are touting the importance of your logo, your color scheme, or your product. Debbie is a 5 on the Enneagram, meaning that she just loves jumping into research. In our early years of brand building, Debbie would spend hours researching the latest tips and trends in branding in order to help us build something we were proud of. 

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Five years ago we built our first brand - Englexis. We loved the name, it was the perfect coupling of my Texan upbringing and Debbie’s British heritage. We slaved over the perfect logo, which combined the Texas state flag and the Union Jack, perfectly representing us both. I loved that logo so much I even got it tattooed on my arm! Yet - however much time, energy, and skill we poured into designing our perfect brand aesthetic, something just wasn’t working for us. 


Maybe this is exactly where you are. Maybe you’ve nailed the perfect fonts, designed the sleekest and stylish website, or crafted the most beautiful logo, but you've still run aground. 


I’m going to suggest something dangerous here. Something that might feel overwhelming - but I’m going to need you to trust me. Sometimes, in order to grow, you need to take
risks. Sometimes this looks like killing your darlings. Pivoting. Redirecting. Letting go of something that you have poured energy and creativity into - and being prepared to start afresh. If you are looking to learn how to make 6 figures then this is the realist advice that I can give you.

You Already Have A Brand

Perhaps you feel nowhere near this point. Your logo is nothing but a faint sketch on a napkin. You don’t have a creative presence yet and nothing about your brand feels set in stone. I want to encourage you that you are in a great place. 


More so, I want to encourage you that you already have a brand. YOU. You’re your brand. Your smile, your Instagram - you might not even recognize it yet, but you already have a presence that people recognize. Recent studies around social media trends have shown that people are far more interested in getting to know a genuine personality than wanting to follow a perfectly photoshopped life. You are already establishing your brand, by just being exactly who you are!

Stand In Line

What happens the night before Apple drops a new product? People flock. They set up tents and camp out overnight. Sit on the sidewalk on folding chairs. People wait for hours, all to buy a product that they haven’t ever experienced before. That is what we call buy-in. Apple knows that they can draw in thousands of customers on a presale of a product that hasn’t even been released yet. 


There is a strategy to getting people to line up before you even deliver your product. This is THE KEY to understanding how to make 6 figures on your brand in just one year. It sounds almost too good to be true, right? But we did it. 


Before we even released our product (our first online marketing course) we made over $45K in pre-sales from 192 customers in just ONE day. How did we do this? We tapped into an audience that already existed. We weren’t starting from scratch: we were selling to customers who were already there.

So who exactly were these customers? Debbie and I are social media influencers. Through our escapades on our beloved Skoolie, we have grown an Instagram following just shy of 95K. However - we are well aware that our Instagram following was NOT the reason that we hit these incredible sales goals. 


Hear us on this one: Your Instagram and Facebook audience is not your most valuable asset. You actually have no control over the Instagram algorithm, which means that you have no control over what percentage of your followers actually get to see each post. You also don’t own your audience.

On Instagram, the average rate of engagement is 2-7% per post. 2% of 95K is nothing! While Instagram followers might look shiny and impressive, don’t get caught in the trap of believing that they are all that matter! Influencers are starting to wake up to this and we’re seeing more articles proving just this. 


Your email list is far more effective than your followers. Sure, your email list sounds a little less glamorous. Sure, fewer people are going to know your email list numbers. But, trust us, growing your email list should be far more imperative than growing your Instagram followers! 


Here are the reasons why your email list the key to your success: 

  • Ownership - You own all of the names and addresses on your email list. 
  • Engagement - Email open rates tend to be around 20-50% which is considerably higher than Instagram engagement rates. 
  • Conversion - The conversion rate, meaning the likelihood of someone clicking through to your website, is considerably higher than on social media. 


More so, your email list is actually an asset to your brand. It’s actually worth money. If one day you are pitching your product to investors, assuring them that you already have a robust email list is going to be important!

Our Journey and Our Process

When we first realized the importance of an email list, our primary intention for building our brand was growing that list. We pivoted away from our logo. Stopped focusing on our brand aesthetic. And instead, we poured all of our energy into doing whatever we could to grow that list. We intentionally tried to push all of our Instagram and Facebook followers over to that list. Even today, we see our Instagram numbers go up and down, but this doesn’t bother us, because all the meanwhile our email list has been growing by thousands. 


Think of your email list as your behind the scene sales. You can make considerably more money selling to an email list rather than selling to an Instagram audience. How much more money? Well, the marketing industry standard is this:


For every 1000 email addresses in your email list, you should be able to pull in $10,000 of sale revenue. We know this to be true, because we’ve been able to achieve this year, after year, after year… 


So, let’s do the math. If you are looking to know how to make 6 figures then you are going to need Ten Thousand email addresses. 

The Secret Is Out
