Before our life took off in the Skoolie, I used to get so inspired by other individuals, like Expedition Happiness, living their road trip dream.

It can be easy to scroll through an Instagram like ours when we were traveling, and think, wow - it must be fun to be on full time vacation! But that was so far from the reality of our experience. We would never have been able to venture out in our Skoolie if we hadn’t learned how to make money on the road.

Why Learn How To Make Money On The Road?

Do you have the travel bug? That itch? That yearning? To experience the world and get moving in life? Do any of the following thoughts resonate with you:

  • You want to sell everything, live on the road and go on an adventure but you have no idea how it could all work.
  • You’re tired of the daily 9-5 grind and you want out ASAP!
  • There’s a dream house you’re wanting to make a down payment on and need cash!
  • You see others doing the things you’ve only dreamed of doing and you want to know how in the heck they’re doing it.

Perfect! This article is for you. We spend way too much time dreaming the dream rather than living it. In this blog, we want to get you set up with all of the practicalities so that you can start acting on your dreams right now.

3 Top Tips to Discover How to Make Money on the Road

We want to share with you some of our most valuable tips for making money on the road. Without these, we would never have been able to give a full YES to the skoolie lifestyle!

The reality is, there is no such thing as a ‘get rich quick’ program. But, there are ways to set up sustainable and manageable streams of income that you can manage while living a remote lifestyle on the road. In this blog we’re going to discuss:

  1. Creating an online business as a service.
  2. Creating and selling a physical or digital product online.
  3. Affiliate / Network Marketing.
Gabriel Mayes jumps out of the skoolie bus as he celebrates how to make money on the road when living on a skoolie.

How to Make Money on the Road #1: Create an Online Business that Offers a Service

When we were on the road, we ran a business called (drumroll): Site Metropolis. The basic premise was that we offered our services to small cities and businesses and helped to revamp their websites. We discovered that there were tens of thousands of bad websites out there in need of a makeover - which was exactly our expertise!

We brought our design skills to old, clunky, city websites, and brought a fresh flavor to their sites. Check out The City of Blackwell and The City of Fairview - we brought that sophisticated Mayes Team touch and revived these websites back to life! It was a touch of genius on our end and here's why: life on the road meant endlessly passing through small and random cities. This gave us plenty of inspiration to research small cities, find the ones with a clunky, ancient website, and pitch them our services. We found our niche and we were truly going for it!

We started the business in September 2016, and pulled in $83,309 in our first year! And the brilliant thing about web design as a service is that over time, you are bound to need maintenance and modernization. That meant that we were creating long term, sustainable customers every time we scored a new client!

How to Make Money on the Road #2: Sell a Physical or Digital Product Online

Do you have a talent? A hobby? A skill?

Something you could package or teach? Perfect, then you are qualified for this. If you’ve followed us for awhile, then you’ll know that Gabriel and I are passionate about teaching folks how to get found online by boosting their local SEO.

This is a real skill for us. It's something we have mastered first-hand and have a wealth of experience with that we realized could be packaged and sold to other young businesses that were looking to grow.

So, I set out to record myself teaching all the best practice SEO tips! I created an online course that we could sell as a digital product. Our original course was called Photographer Local, and you can still check out the website.

It is one thing to have a skill and film a course, but it is another thing to take that course and know how to make money on the road. This is where ClickFunnels came into the picture. We bought an account with ClickFunnels and hosted our course on their platform. They function via a membership program, where you can build your sales page and offer your course to an audience within your niche.

Next, we attached an online merchant service so that we were set up to receive payments online.

Once we advertised the course to our email list of subscribers, we were in motion! The rest is history.

Even though we're no longer on the bus, we've stayed in the game of offering digital courses. We love this side of our business. If you've never taken one of our courses, now would be a great time to check out our Instagram Master Class! Of all our courses, this is one of my absolute favorites - and if you are looking to learn more about the ins and outs of earning money via your social media accounts, then taking this course is a no-brainer!

How to Make Money on the Road #3: Brand Relationships

Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs are a great way to create a second or third income stream. We’ve partnered with some amazing products and software companies to represent their brands - and we get paid for doing it!

Did you follow the link above to check out ClickFunnels? Well, if you did, then you’ve already experienced an affiliate link first hand! ClickFunnels pays us 40% of the monthly recurring revenue from each person that signs up for their services as a result of our exposure to their business. Mathematically, this means that if 100 people pay $99/mo for ClickFunnels and we get 40% of that. Each and every month. That’s $3,960 of MRR.

Network Marketing

Network Marketing (also known as Multi-Level Marketing, MLM) is a perfect means if you are looking to learn how to make money on the road. You partner with products that you believe in and give a free sample of the product to someone. If they love it then they’ll buy it - and this repeats, again and again.

This is our criteria for choosing a product or business that we want to partner with:

  1. It needs to be new. We don't want to join something that is already saturated.
  2. The Recurring revenue or “comp-plan” needs to pay very well!
  3. We look for a product that doesn't require someone to change their spending habits.
  4. The product needs to be something we've used and believe in.
  5. The product also needs to have a money-back guarantee.

If you think this is a good option for you, you can go to Google and search for network marketing companies and you’ll be sure to find all kinds of different products out there. There are a lot of really good ones to choose from!

Stop Sleeping on Your Dreams

We truly believe that ANYONE can learn how to make money on the road and say YES to a new and adventurous lifestyle. It's easier than you think. The upfront costs are manageable and once you’ve figured out how, you’ll have generated ongoing revenue streams that can last for years (trust us!).
